GEOGRAPHY
Alonissos is an island located in the Northern Sporades, it belongs geographically to the Sporades island complex and administratively to the prefecture of Magnesia. It has an area of 64.5 square kilometers and a coastline of 67 kilometers. Alonissos is the smallest of the inhabited islands of the Sporades. It is separated from Skopelos by the Strait of Alonissos, which is a sea channel 3.7 kilometers wide, which has two uninhabited islands in between, Mikros and Megalo Agiorgis. Alonissos is surrounded by several uninhabited islands and islets, among which the Dio Aderfia (Two Siblings), Peristera, Lehousam, Kyra Panagia, Pappus, Koumbi, Grammeza, Melissa, Sfika and Iura, Piperi Alonissos and Skandzoura. Southwest of Alonissos is Skopelos and southeast is Skyros.

The climate of Alonissos is Mediterranean, with rainy winter and dry summer. Average temperature of the island is 17°C. The main characteristic of the island is the limestone rocks, the high rocks that reach the sea and the caves, habitat of the Mediterranean seal Monachus monachus. Remarkable indeed, is the fact that approximately 2/3 of the world population of the Mediterranean seal is found in Greece. The island, like the rest of the Sporades complex, has remarkable flora and fauna. Among other things, the flora of Alonissos consists of pines, wild olives, maples, cypresses, shrubs such as koumaria, shinos, holly, fillyki, heather. It also has endemic plants such as Campanula reiseri and rechingeri, Linum gyaricum and Areanaria phitosiana. The orchids of Alonissos also stand out, even though their variety is limited compared to the rest of the Sporades. More generally, the island's flora is smaller compared to those of the other Sporades, perhaps because no major scientific research has been carried out there to date. The fauna of Alonissos is rich, consisting of about 300 species of fish, 80 species of birds, reptiles and mammals. Rare species that can be found in the area are the Mediterranean seal, the red coral, the black petrel, the eider gull, the cormorant and the Jura ibex. Birds such as the bald eagle, the cormorant, the herring gull, and the gray herons are also found in the area. The underwater fauna is also rich, as several species of dolphins and whales are found on the island.

It is said that the name Alonissos was mistakenly attributed to today's island, when the toponyms were recorded during the period of the establishment of the Greek state, as the ancient geographers called the islet northeast of today's Alonissos, Kyra Panagia, as Alonissos. In ancient times Alonissos was called Ikos, while in the Middle Ages Liadromia. The population of Alonissos amounts to 2750 inhabitants. Their main occupations are viticulture, agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing and tourism. It is worth noting that pressing grapes was the main occupation of the inhabitants until 1965, when the capital (Patitiri) was hit by an earthquake.

HISTORY
One of the first Aegean islands to be inhabited is Alonissos, previously called Ikos. It is a treasure island, which combines mythical heroes, shipwrecks and sunken ancient cities. Before the Paleolithic period, it is probable that the island was united with the neighboring islands and Thessaly. It is also believed that the Cretans led by Staphylos colonized today's Alonissos and Skopelos during the 16th century BC. Subsequently, the Mycenaeans settled on the island at the current location of Kokkinokastro. At the end of the Mycenaean era, Peleus, father of Achilles, arrived on the island, where he remained until the end of his life. The archaeological finds testify that the island was inhabited in the Neolithic period, at Cape Kokkinokastro. It is also worth noting that on the neighboring island of Giura, in the cave of Cyclops, evidence of human presence from the 9th millennium BC was found. Jason's Argo had passed through the channel of Alonissos to Colchis, and the ships of the Achaeans to Troy.

Then, in the Geometric Era, the island was disturbed by the Dolopes pirates, however in 475 BC joined the First Athenian Alliance in order to protect itself. During the Classical Period, Ikos was highly developed. It had two inhabited cities, hence the name "bipolis". One city was on the site of today's Kokkinokastro and the other on the site of today's Old Alonissos. In Ikos during this period, many vines were cultivated and fine wine was produced, while many exports were carried out in amphorae, the handles of which bore the inscription IKION. The island, at the same time, served as a passage, as evidenced by the shipwrecks, and was the base of the Athenian fleet for the battles against Philip. In 190 BC, the island was captured by the Roman fleet. In 1204 it fell to the Franks, then to the Venetians in 1453 and finally to the Turks in 1538. Finally, during and after the Greek Revolution, Greeks from various parts of Greece and the local population created the newly established Greek community of the place.
