GEOGRAPHY
Ammouliani is a small island of only 4.5 sq.km. in the bay of Mount Athos in Halkidiki, the only inhabited one in the region of Central Macedonia. Administratively, Ammouliani falls under the Municipality of Aristoteli. It is 120 km from the city of Thessaloniki. The island has a population of approximately 500 inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in fishing and tourism. The vegetation in Ammouliani is low and mainly dominated by olive trees. To the southeast of Ammouliani, at a very close distance, are the Drenia islands, also known by the locals as "Gaidouronisia".
HISTORY
Until 1925, the island was part of the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos, inhabited by 2-3 monks who were engaged in cultivating the land, grazing animals and picking olives. After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the island was granted to Greek refugees from Asia Minor from areas of the Propontis (Gallimi, Pasalimani, Skupia). Within a few years, due to the experience they had from their life in Asia Minor, the Ammoulians managed to distinguish themselves in the field of fishing.
