This island is located in the Dodecanese complex. It has 44 inhabitants and administratively belongs to the Municipality of Patmos. It has an area of 6,697 square kilometres and a coastline of 25 kilometres. Arkioi is connected by ferry to Patmos, Leros and Lipsi. The island is rocky and home to many wild animals such as partridges, owls, wild goats and wild seagulls. In addition, loggerhead turtles and monk seals take refuge on the island. The inhabitants of Arkioi are mainly engaged in fishing and less in tourism. Since 2019, the Primary School of Arkia has been operating with only one student. Finally, it is worth noting that the name Arkioi refers to the entire complex of islands located around this island, which includes Abaptistos, Argeloussa, Kalovolos, Koumaros (or Komaros), Makronisi, Marathos (or Marathi ), Smyneronisi (or Sminero), Spolato, Strongylos, Tsouka, Tsoukaki and Psathonisi.
HISTORY
The ancient name of the island was Akritis and Narkoi. The first inhabitants of Arkioi were the Cares, then the Dorians and finally the Ionians of Miletus, who used Arkioi as an intermediate station on the Samos-Kos road. Prehistoric ceramics from the Neolithic period were found in Tiganakia. A fortress was established in the first Hellenistic years. The NW side of the castle dates back to the 4th century BC. It is said that the castle in the Roman period, when Julius Caesar was a hostage in Farmakonisi, was destroyed by him after his release. The current port of Arkioi, called the port of Augusta, takes its name from the fortress or "Castle of Augusta". In the Byzantine years, Arkioi were used as pastures of the Monastery of Patmos. In addition, in the Byzantine period the ancient fortifications were suitably strengthened and reused.
