GEOGRAPHY
The island of Donoussa is located east of Naxos 8 nm. and north of Amorgos 14 nm. It is an island of the Cyclades and the northernmost of the Small Cyclades. Administratively, Donoussa belongs to the Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades with a population of 187 inhabitants who are engaged in agricultural work and in the summer months with tourism. The island has an area of 14 sq.km. hilly and stony terrain and highest point Papas peak at 385 meters. A characteristic feature of Donoussa is the many capes and bays, including Rousa, Stavros, Dendros, Piratis and Mataios bays. In the east of the island very close to the coast is the rocky island of Skylonisi. The main settlement and port of the island is Stavros.
HISTORY
Donoussa, as mentioned by the ancient Roman poet Virgil, was the passage of Aeneas on his way back from Troy to Italy. At the same time, Donoussa is part of Greek mythology, as according to the myth, Dionysus hid Ariadne on the island so that Theseus would not find her. The island seems to have been inhabited for the first time at the time of the early Cycladic Civilization, in 3000 BC, according to the findings that have come to light. Fortified settlement of the 9th-8th c. BC shows that the island was a trading station, which connected Attica with the eastern Aegean. In the 1st century BC the island is granted to the Rhodians by Mark Antony. During the Byzantine Empire, Donoussa was a place of exile, while during the time when it was under the occupation of the Venetians and the Ottomans respectively, the island suffered many lootings by pirates. In recent years after the establishment of the Greek state, the island became known when King George I, visited it. During World War I, Donoussa was a coal supply center for the German cruiser Geiben, which was hiding behind Cape Aspro. In World War II. Donoussa became famous when the German ship "Orion" sank off the coast of the island on September 23, 1944.

HOW TO GET THERE

The island is connected by ferry to the port of Piraeus and the journey takes about 7 hours. During the summer months there are routes 4 times a week, with stops in other islands of the Cyclades as well as the Dodecanese. Throughout the year there are routes connecting Donoussa with the other islands of the Small Cyclades and of course Naxos.

HOW TO GET AROUND

The island is small, so for those who love hiking it is probably the best option. At the same time, you can move around the island either with your private vehicle, or rent a car, bicycle or motorbike, as well as with the local bus that makes several routes during the summer months.
