GEOGRAPHY
Kimolos belongs to the island complex of Cyclades and administratively to the South Aegean region. Particularly, it is located northeast of Milos and southwest of Sifnos. Moreover, it has an area of 36 sq. Km and a coastline of 38 Km. The population of the island is 730 inhabitants. Worth mentioning is the pentagonal shape of the island, with its various shores, scattered elsewhere with steep, sharp rocks and elsewhere with windless sandy beaches. In addition, Kimolos is predominantly mountainous with the highest peak being Paleokastro at an altitude of 397 meters. What’s more, the land of the island is barren with agriculture limited to the cultivation of cereals, vineyards, fruit and vegetable trees. Finally, the island is famous since antiquity for its figs. Its subsoil is volcanic, rich in layers of porphyry, silvery barite, concrete perlite and chalk, thanks to which the island took its name (‘kimolia’ in greek is the chalk).
HISTORY
The history of the island is lost in the paths of time. Particularly, Kimolos has been known since antiquity mainly because of the famous chalk that was mined here and then distributed throughout the ancient world. The chalk of the island was in such great demand that Kimolos minted its own coins. In addition, the excavations carried out on the island brought to light a number of findings from the geometric, archaic, Greco-Roman era as well as from the first Christian years. According to these findings, in the area of the strait that connected the island of Agios Andreas with the mainland, there was an ancient city. The same city was inhabited until the first Christian times and then sank in the sea by a strong earthquake. Indeed, at the bottom of the strait one can see when the sea is calm, the ruins of this lost state. It should be also noted that remains of the geometric and archaic era were also found in Polykastro, and that Kimolos was a tax subject to the Athenians.

However, the Franks occupied the island in the 13th century and remained until 1566 when the ottomans conquered the island. The ottomans, nonetheless, never inhabited the island for fear of frequent pirate raids, which allowed some relative freedom to the inhabitants. Then, in 1638, many locals left the island because of pirates who had set fire to their homes. With this in mind, due to the island’s inability to withstand the pirate raids, the locals allied with them, launching a period of peculiar alliance for the island that enriched the inhabitants of Kimolos with naval knowledge and travelled them to the ends of the world. Subsequently, In the late 18th century and during the short period of the Russian-turkish War, the Russians attempted to exploit the island’s barite deposits but without result. Finally, the union of Kimolos with the rest of Greece comes together with the rest of the Cyclades islands in 1830.
