GEOGRAPHY
Meganisi is an island of the Ionian Sea, the largest island of the Principality of Lefkada (Meganisi, Skorpios, Skorpidi, Heloni, Madouri, Tsokari) and is located between Lefkada and Etoloakarnania. Apart from the Princely Islands complex, Meganisi also belongs to the wider Televoid islands complex. The area of the island is 20.1 sq.km. with the highest peak at 301 meters. The population of the island amounts to approximately 1000 inhabitants. The people of Meganisi have agriculture, animal husbandry and fishing as their main occupations. There are three settlements on the island, Katomeri, Vathi and Spartochori.
HISTORY
According to Strabo, Meganisi belonged to the Tafies Islands, together with the rest of the islands between Lefkada and present-day Etoloakarnania. During the Bronze Age, the island was the base of the pirate people of the Tafia or Televoi, who had dominated the maritime area. Since the time of the decline of the Televoe pirates, the island has followed the same course as Lefkada. A notable historical fact is that during the Greco-Italian War (1940-41) the Papanikolis submarine had its secret base in a sea cave in Meganissi.
