Orestiada: the seat of the Municipality of the same name is also the northernmost urban center of Greece. It has a population of 18 thousand inhabitants and is the second largest city in Thrace after Alexandroupoli. It is 109 km from the city of Thessaloniki. The city was founded by Greek refugees from Andrianoupolis after the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. Today the city is considered an important commercial and agricultural center of northeastern Greece and has a very good road and rail network. Orestiada is also considered a student town as the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences of the Demokriteio University operates. A historical-folkloric museum operates in the city.
