ECOTOURISM

Skepasmenos Gorge with the waterfalls: one of the most famous gorges in Macedonia is that of Skepasmenos. It is located on the western slopes of the Pierian Mountains. It is 8 kilometers long with the route being at an altitude of 450 meters to 1350 meters. During your hike in the gorge you will see a unique waterfall of 40 meters high, while in the forest you will come across about 10 more beautiful small waterfalls, natural lakes, old water mills and high cliffs. The natural beauty of the landscape will pleasantly surprise you as you will come across plane trees, willows, peach orchids, oak trees, hazelnut trees, etc.

 Polyphytos Artificial Lake: an artificial lake of the Aliakmonas River in the prefecture of Kozani that was formed in 1973 and covers 73 sq.km. In the waters of the lake there are 17 species of freshwater fish. Around the lake there are several species of fauna such as mammals and reptiles. The area is a winter refuge for migratory species.

MOUNTAIN TOURISM

The morphology of the area with the high mountains in the Pieria Mountains, give the opportunity to mountain climbing enthusiasts to carry out their hobby in the area. Climbing, climbing, traversing and descending are ideal activities in the Pieria Mountains. For this reason, there are three mountain refuges in the area. The Velvedo Mountaineering Refuge at the location of Iurtia, the SEO Kozani Mountaineering Refuge at Flambouro Peak in Pieria and the EOS Kozani Mountaineering Refuge at Livadia Katafygiou.

 

RELIGIOUS TOURISM

In the Municipality of Velvedo there are notable points of religious interest that are worth visiting. The most important church is that of the Dormition of the Virgin (Post-Byzantine Monument of 1804).

Other important monuments of religious importance are the Byzantine churches of Agios Nikolaos, Agios Minas, Agios Georgios Gratsanis, Prophet Ilias Palaiogratsanos, Agios Nikolaos Katafygios and the Monastery of Agia Triada. In total there are 80 chapels in the Municipality.

SPORT TOURISM

Velvedo Hill Climb Race: This is a race that is held once a year by the Velventos Motor Sports Association and concerns a 3.7 kilometer route following the road Metochi – Paleogratsanos.

WINE TOURISM

On the shores of the artificial lake Polyfytos up to the Pieria Mountains stretch vineyards which, due to the climate, are an ideal place for the cultivation of many varieties with unique Macedonian wines. In the area there are two certified wineries to visit ready to welcome you to taste the wines, take a guided tour of the vineyards and explore the secrets of tasting. So complete your wine visit with a walk to the Kamkoutis Vineyard and the Vogiatzis Estate.

MUSEUM

Folklore Museum of Velvedo: The museum is housed in a restored mansion of Macedonian architecture from the 19th century. In the museum, the visitor can admire the local costumes and objects related both to the daily life of the inhabitants of the past centuries and to the traditional professions they practiced.
