AGROTOURISM

Zagora is known for its unique-tasting apples, which also hold the European seal of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Through the Agricultural Cooperative of Zagora, which is one of the first to be established in the country (1916), excellent work is done for the production and promotion of the Zagora apple, with the total annual production quantities amounting to 10 to 15 thousand tons.

CULTURAL TOURISM

Between the villages of Tsagarada and Xorichti is one of the oldest stone single-arched bridges in the country, which was built in 1728 and is still preserved today. It is 18 meters long and in previous centuries it was the only land road in the area for commercial purposes and not only.

ECOTOURISM

In the center of the village of Tsagarada there is a large plane tree with a trunk of 15 meters in circumference. Its size also reveals the long history of this plane tree, as its age exceeds 1000 years.

Kissos Waterfalls: very close to the village of Kissos in a steep wooded area with huge rocks there is a double waterfall of great natural beauty and an ideal place for those who love diving in icy waters.

FILM TOURISM

The village of Damouchari is famous for its natural beauty with its unique beach and green landscape. Many tourists visit the area as in September 2007 the famous movie musical Mamma Mia was filmed.

HIKING TOURISM

Along eastern Pelion in the municipality of Zagora – Mouresi there is a large network of paths. These routes follow unique landscapes sometimes in the forest and trees and sometimes next to the sea. Get fully equipped and start your hike. The most important hiking routes are the following:

Puri-Choreto, Zagora-Choreto, Obrios-Puri, Obrios-Zagora, Anilio-Choreto, Anilio-Agios Ioannis, Tsagarada Crossing, Tsagarada-Damouchari, Damouhari-Mylopotamos, Xurihti-Tsagarada, Tsagarada-Mouresi, Anilio-Kisos.

HISTORICAL TOURISM

To the north of the village of Chorefto are the ancient Ipnoi, where many Xerxes’ ships were wrecked in 480 BC during the Persian wars in Greece.

Castle of Damouhari: in the village of Damouhari between the two bays are the ruins of a Byzantine fortress which seems to have been in full operation in the 11th century.

RELIGIOUS TOURISM

Visit the holy church of Agia Irini, built in 1740 and admire the unique bell tower in Zagora.

In the village of Tsagarada, it is worth visiting the historic churches of Agios Taxiarchis with the unique Venetian-style iconostasis built in 1749 and the church of Agios Stefanos with the archpriest’s throne and the beautiful iconostasis built in 1772.

In the village of Kissos is the church of Agia Marina, built in 1747, which has a three-aisled basilica, a wood-carved iconostasis, and unique frescoes. The temple has been declared a historic preserved monument.

Cross the beautiful forest of Pelion on your bike, enjoying the natural landscape as well as your sport.

MUSEUM – LIBRARY

Public Historical Library of Zagora: in the central square of Zagora there is a historical library of the same name that has been operating since 1762 and among other things, 5 thousand manuscripts and antiquities are kept there. The historicity of the library is very long as its scholars were the Greek enlighteners Rigas Feraios and Anthimos Gazis. The library today provides the opportunity to read valuable books.

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

In the coastal village of Chorefto, the olive festival takes place every year in August and on August 29 the festival of Agios Ioannis Prodromos.

In Tsagarada, the festival of Agia Paraskevi is held every year on July 26 with traditional dances and plenty of food and drink.

In the village of Agios Dimitrios, a 3-day festival is held in the Holy Church of the Transfiguration every year on August 6.

Near the village of Anilio, on the day of the feast of Zoodochos Pigi, in the small church of Panagia Faneromeni, after the church service, a revelry takes place with music, dances, food and wine.
